While there are a lot of wonderful open-source emulators out there, some shine a little brighter than others. Today, we’re going to be looking at the RPCS3 Emulator, a fully functional PS3 emulator, and Xenia Emulator, one of the best XBOX 360 emulators that is currently available.
ESX – PlayStation 3 Emulator For PC ESX was the second emulator after RPCS3 development, but due to the debugging issues, I have ranked it on the seventh number in my list. This emulator is capable of playing almost 70% of PS3 games, and also, the inbuilt system allows you to download up to 90 MB of required files for running any game. RPCS3 is a multi-platform open-source Sony PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger written in C for Windows, Linux and BSD. We are currently experiencing a higher server volume than usual. We sincerely apologize for any inconveniences. ESX PS3 - Emulator Link. Though ESX is an emulator for research purpose, it still ranks high as one of our best emulator for PS3. ESX emulator is simple to use and very compatible with most popular PS3 games. ESX is available for Windows Os. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENT FOR ESX. Windows 7 and above At least 1GB RAM. ESX is another one of the best PS3 emulators, even if it’s still in beta. ESX is written in C and uses a decompiled PS3 XMB kernel in order to archive native emulation of PS3 games. But because it’s in beta, the ESX PS3 emulator is limited to running only PS3 exclusive games.
There are plenty of comparisons to be drawn between open-source emulators, but there are also a lot of important differences. Here, one of the primary reasons for drawing comparisons between the two is the crossover in popular games. Which one really works the best with them? Without further ado, it’s time to explore!
Development
A lot of time goes into creating an emulator and some emulators require more work than others. When we look at how emulators are developed, some are open-source emulators and others are closed-source emulators.
With open-source emulators, the source code is freely available for people to modify as they see fit. This means that an entire community can group together to improve the emulator, fix bugs and make sure that it works with more games over time. With a closed-source emulator, the content is usually protected so that it cannot legally be modified by a third party. Closed-source emulators are essentially the intellectual property of those who create them.
RPCS3 Emulator
When people first started trying to emulate PS3 games, they encountered a lot of difficulties. To put it simply, the cell architecture that exists behind a lot of PS3 games made it far too difficult to emulate. When RPCS3 was first released, it made a lot of traction just by being able to emulate something that a lot of people had believed to be impossible.
While RPCS3 was first released back in 2011, it has been under constant development. It was hosted on Google Code, moved to GitHub and had a new version release in the middle of 2019.
Xenia Emulator
Straight off the bat, Xenia Emulator is rather special because it was the first emulator to be able to successfully run a commercial Xbox 360 game. The emulator itself is open source, meaning that contributors are able to go in and tweak things using GitHub.
Xenia Emulator actually has some pretty unique origins. When Ben Vanik returned from Japan, he was frustrated with the region-locked games that he returned with. One of the best emulators for Xbox 360 games was born out of that frustration.
Updates
When you download an emulator, you want to know that you are going to be able to play more games as time passes. There will always be a few minor issues, but those issues being patched regularly is really important and will improve your overall gaming experience.
The way in which different emulators are updated can vary. With closed-source emulators, you often have to wait for official releases. Sometimes, these can be accessed early if you use things like Patreon. With open-source emulators, these are usually released whenever they’re available.
RPCS3 Emulator
As an open-source emulator, RPCS3 is constantly open to contributors who have the skill sets that they need. Through their Patreon, they are able to keep some developers on on a full-time basis so that the software is frequently updated. At the moment, RPCS3 has a full team of developers, each with their own specialist interest in things like graphics, bug fixes and audio.
Xenia Emulator
While Xenia updates don’t come as frequently as some updates for other emulators do, many players love the fact that they have a roadmap laying out their future plans. At the moment, they are working really hard on bringing support for Xenia to Linux, as Xenia is currently only really suitable for Windows.
They’re also working on pixel-perfect accuracy, connectivity for Xbox Live games and game servers. The latter of which will never be on the actual Xbox Live network, but they will appear in the same way. Another project that they’re working on is making Xenia backwards compatible so that it also works with Xbox games.
Compatibility
Before you download any game console emulator, you need to make sure that it is suitable for your own operating system. What operating system are you currently using? Do you have a good graphics card? These are both things that could affect your gaming experience with an emulator as you do need to have some pretty good specs to hand.
System Requirements
If you’re planning on running RPCS3, you’ll have to make sure that your operating system is either Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10. You should also make sure that your processor is at least an Intel Quad Core i7 and that you have a minimum of 8GB of RAM.
For Xenia, it’s highly recommended that you’re running Windows 10. Anything lower than this is not actively supported by the developers so you might encounter some problems that can’t be fixed. It’s also recommended that you have at least 6GB of RAM and an i7 processor.
Graphics Card Compatibility
When it comes to graphics cards, it’s usually worth investing in the best graphics card that you can. A good graphics card will only ever improve your experience. For RPCS3, it’s worth making sure that you have a NVIDIA GTX 780 Ti or 970. For Xenia, you should really be using a NVIDIA GTX 980 or later.
A lot of the games that can be played on either of these emulators are heavily reliant on their speed and graphics. If you want them to play right, you’re going to have to make sure that your computer can keep up.
Games
While there are a lot of games that are exclusive to either of these emulators, there are also a lot of crossovers. That’s where this comparison really shines. When you’re picking an emulator, you need to make sure that you can play the games that you want to play and that they’re going to work perfectly.
RPCS3 Games
With the RPCS3, there is a full compatibility list that you can access. Some of the best games that function perfectly include:
- LittleBigPlanet
- LEGO Batman 3
- Minecraft
- Dark Souls 2
- Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY
- Batman: Arkham City GOTY
Xenia Games
Xenia also offers a full compatibility list, complemented by a range of international games that are rarely seen on emulators. Some of the best games that are currently available include:
- Dragon Ball Raging Blast
- Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
- Red Dead Redemption
- Walking Dead 2
The Overall Winner
For us, the overall winner here would have to be RPCS3. This emulator is just a little bit further ahead, with more titles being made available that can be played at full speed. That doesn’t mean that Xenia isn’t quickly catching up, with the developers doing a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure that it works perfectly.
